Two far left women known mostly by their famous initials are at extreme odds over the future of the Supreme Court.
Freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC, favors packing the Court with liberal justices in order to overwhelm the current 5-4 conservative majority.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, or RBG, thinks that would be a bad idea. A very bad idea rooted in extreme ignorance of the Court’s role and purpose in a constitutional republic.
From The Daily Wire:
Desperate to keep a conservative majority from ruling the Supreme Court, leftists have proposed court-packing as a means to tip the scales. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says that would be a bad idea.
Speaking with NPR, Ginsburg denounced past attempts to pack the Supreme Court, such as when President Franklin Roosevelt attempted to do so in the 1930s.
“Nine seems to be a good number,” the justice said. “It’s been that way for a long time. I think it was a bad idea when President Franklin Roosevelt tried to pack the Court.” …
Shortly before her election to U.S. Congress, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) openly stated that Democrats should pack the Supreme Court. “I think that we take back the House, we take back the Senate, we take back the presidency, and we pack the Supreme Court of the United States of America,” she said. …
About AOC’s plan to pack the Court, RBG had this to say, from NPR:
“If anything would make the court look partisan,” she said, “it would be that — one side saying, ‘When we’re in power, we’re going to enlarge the number of judges, so we would have more people who would vote the way we want them to.’ “
That impairs the idea of an independent judiciary, she said.
“We are blessed in the way no other judiciary in the world is,” she noted. “We have life tenure. The only way to get rid of a federal judge is by impeachment. Congress can’t retaliate by reducing our salary, so the safeguards for judicial independence in this country, I think, are as great or greater than anyplace else in the world.” …
One far left liberal woman smacked down by another.
